News and press release content in Drupal components

The content you provide the digital team for publishing your news items and press releases displays in different places. For instance, a title displays on the detail page of a news story/press release while its headline displays in the news component.

Some details are the same between press releases and news items, but they also have some differences.

URLs, location and scheduling

Press releases and news stories are displayed in different listings on transamerica.com.

The news component on the homepage cannot be scheduled in advance.

Additions to the news component can be made according to team availability. You can expect availability between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MT. Availability is sometimes as early as 6 a.m. MT so please speak to the digital team to find out if your content can be published earlier.

Meta content (search engine content)

Press releases and news stories both have meta description functionality. Meta content displays in search engine results. The title of your press release/news displays along with the meta description that you provide.

  1. Title: same as the press release/news story title
  2. Meta description: 160 max characters

Anatomy of the home & news page component

This component displays on both the homepage and the news page.

These elements are the same for press releases and news stories.

  1. Headline
    • Maximum of 75 characters
  2. Teaser text
    • Maximum of 200 characters
  3. Link text
    • Maximum of 25 characters
  4. Featured story
    • It is possible to make any news story or press release the featured story in the left column. Specify this in your request.
  5. Featured story image
    • A default image will be displayed here if you do not provide an image
    • If you provide an image, it should be exactly square to avoid undesired cropping, and a minimum of 800px by 800px.

Elements of press releases in Drupal

Press release detail page

Both press releases and news stories have a Title, but only the press release has a PDF download built into the page template.

In the image below:

  1. Title: no character maximum
  2. PDF: max file size 30MB

Social media image

The social media image displays with the page title and teaser text when you share a press release link to social media, as in the Facebook example on the right. It typically also displays when people share the link in messaging apps.

Currently, only the Drupal Press Release content type contains the meta (social media preview) image functionality. This will be added to news stories and all webpages in 2024.

Elements of a news story page

News pages provide a couple more customization options. In the image below:

  1. Page hero image: by default, the page hero image is a stock photo but it can be replaced with a custom image. Hero images should be 1920px × 480px. The image focal point should be oriented to the right so that the page heading does not conceal it.
  2. Title: displays on the page in the same way as press releases. No maximum character count.
  3. Other images: news stories can contain images within the body of the story. If you provide an image it will be positioned at the top of the article at full width. Full-width images are 1100px wide and 540px tall. If you would like it placed somewhere else, please specify in your request. Smaller images can be inserted. We can position them to the left, right or center.
