Identity theft checklist

Think you’ve been a victim of identity theft? Take the following steps immediately:

Report fraud or identity theft

File a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at identitytheft.gov or by calling 877-FTC-HELP.

Contact your creditors’ fraud departments

Explain that someone stole your identity and ask them to close or freeze your accounts.

Change passwords

Change logins, passwords, and PINs for all of your accounts as soon as possible.

Monitor your accounts

Review your financial statements and credit reports for unauthorized charges.

Report to local police

Provide the police a copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report, photo ID, proof of address, and any proof you have of the theft.

Contact credit bureaus
